Leading boiler and solar manufacturer, Worcester, part of the Bosch Group, is launching a new system for home heating - 'Greenstore' ground source heat pumps (GSHPs).
Ground source heat pumps are set to revolutionise the way homes are heated in the future, as they efficiently heat the home with reduced impact on the environment. With rising fuel bills and concerns over climate change, homeowners are increasingly asking about renewable technologies for their home heating requirements.

Worcester heat pumps are available as a system variant for use with separate cylinders for the production of hot water.

Worcester heat pumps are intended to be the sole source of heating and hot water production for the home giving the home owner the option of removing the existing heat source from the property and in most cases, making the heat pump the only source.

A recent survey by the Energy Saving Trust, found that over 85% of people would consider installing green technology in their home to reduce bills. Tony Nott, product manager for new technologies at Worcester, Bosch Group, comments on the recent success of renewables:

"Our 'Greenskies' solar panels have been extremely popular with homeowners and we expect the 'Greenstore' heat pumps to follow this example. Ground source heat pumps really are one of the technologies of the future; they can reduce household bills and our impact on the environment, making them very appealing to homeowners. The system is capable of heating the whole home and is ideal for providing under floor heating."

Installation Costs

Each installation is unique to the property but typically installations cost from £7,000-£12,000. To encourage householders to invest, the government is offering grants of up to £1,200 under the 'Clear Skies' initiative to go towards the cost. Worcester Greenstore heat pumps are eligible for this grant.

Running Costs

Heat pumps are run by electricity, but users can reduce this cost by subscribing to a green tariff scheme, which offers discounts on electricity used to promote renewables. As energy bills are reduced, GSHP's are able to offer a payback which significantly betters those of other renewable technologies. As an added bonus, they will also significantly increase the value of a property.

The Technology

Ground source heat pumps draw energy from the ground and deliver it to the building. The system uses a compressor in a similar way to a fridge, by removing energy from a source and transferring it elsewhere.

How it works!

Worcester heat pumps make use of the energy from the sun which is absorbed by the earth. The energy below the surface is available to be extracted by the heat pump.

The heat pumps use the constant energy available in the ground with a refrigerant circuit to allow the temperatures to be boosted to a useful level for the provision of heating on hot water for the home.

The system is made up of an energy collector, generally a ground source heat pump, a hot water store and the heat delivery system of the property, preferably an underfloor heating or alternatively oversized radiators.
